Why hypnosis for childbirth works for some and not for others.

There are certain variables that come into play, only some of which can be controlled.

  1. Your physiology. You just can’t change it. Some women are simply going to have an easier time than others. However, much can be done to increase your chances of an easy, comfortable birth (birth location, care provider, personal preparation including nutrition and exercise, etc.).
  2. Your baby’s position. You can do a lot here to encourage Baby to adopt a nice anterior, head-down position. Check out spinningbabies.com.
  3. Lack of support. I’m not talking so much about a partner who isn’t really hands on. I’m talking more about people who will actually sabotage you. You know, like the nurse who says “oh, well, you’re doing really well right now, but just you wait! In a couple of hours you’ll be begging for an epidural.” Or the doctor who says, “yeah, that hypnosis stuff doesn’t really work.” Or the midwife who thinks that unless you’re in agony with lots of adrenaline pumping, you aren’t going to produce a baby. These people have good intentions. They simply don’t understand that it is possible to give birth comfortably without medication and that their negative comments and attitudes sometimes prevent women from achieving comfortable unmedicated birth!
  4. Unresolved issues of fear or control can prevent you from really opening yourself to giving birth fearlessly (a key component to painless birthing). If you are a survivor of sexual assault or abuse it is generally recommended to seek professional help. A qualified hypnotherapist is an excellent choice as they will give you tools for releasing negative emotions that might be triggered by your impending birth experience as well as tools for healing the emotional wound in your soul. More thorough processing is needed, but with a baby coming your main concern is to get to an emotional place where you can give birth joyfully.
  5. Your commitment level. The bottom line is that you must, must, must practice every day from the time you take your class to the day you give birth. If you do not practice, you will not be conditioned to use your wonderful hypno-tools and will not be satisfied with the results. It is up to you to do your homework and practice every day.
  6. Choice. You must choose to use your hypno-tools during labor. No one can force you to. They can give you suggestions and reminders, but it is up to you to actually use them. It is up to you to choose to remain calm and focused. No one else can do it for you. You are the only one giving birth to your baby.
